DSL and ISDN Set-Up for Win 95/98

A. Installation of the Network Adapter Driver

To install and configure your Ethernet adapter manually:

  1. Open the Control Panels (under the Settings menu item in the Start menu) and double-click on the Network icon. If you don't have a Network icon, you need to run Add/Remove Programs and then Windows Setup, which are both available in the Control Panels window, to install network support.

  2. Click on the Add... button and double-click on Adapter.

  3. Select your Ethernet adapter manufacturer and type from the list. If you wish to use a network adapter that is not listed, contact the manufacturer for a Windows 95/98-compliant driver.

  4. The Network Control Panel will display several protocols and clients, such as Client for Microsoft Networks, Client for NetWare Networks, IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol, and NetBEUI. You don’t need any of these protocols to connect to the Internet. Unless you’re going to use any of these protocols, you should select and remove them, after installing the TCP/IP protocol as indicated in the next section. This will save a lot of memory and reduce network traffic. You do need the Client for Microsoft Networks if you plan to use the file and print sharing features of WindowsNT and Windows 95/98.

A. Install the TCP/IP Protocol

  1. Click the Add... button from the Network control panel again to add a new Protocol. Select Protocol and click the Add... button again.

  2. Select Manufacturer Microsoft and Network Protocol TCP/IP. Click OK to close the Network Control Panel. Unless you did a full installation of Windows 95/98, you will be prompted for the Windows 95/98 software CD-ROM. In some cases, the installation will require the Windows 95/98 software CD-ROM even if you did a full installation of Windows 95/98.
  3. When the installation program finishes copying the files, restart your PC.

B. Configure TCP/IP Properties

  1. Locate the letter or e-mail message that was sent to you by Communication Services - it contains your IP Address, Gateway Router Address, and Subnet Mask.
  2. From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel, then double-click on the Network icon.
  3. Select the TCP/IP protocol and click the Properties button.
  4. Click on the IP Address tab (if it isn't already selected) and select "Specify an IP address".

  5. Now click on the Gateway tab.

  6. Now click on the DNS Configuration tab.

  7. When you have finished adding the DNS IP addresses, click OK, then click OK in the Network dialog box.
  8. Click Yes when prompted to restart your PC.
